Here are some more photographs from my Travel and Documentary Photography class in China that took place in June. The class was attended by 27 photography students from The Art Institutes. Most of the students, 16, were from the Houston campus, but we had students from campuses all over the country which gave us a great mix of styles and interests. The trip lasted for 11 days and covered Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai. You can see the first set of images at ‘Photographs From My China Trip (Part 1)‘. These images were taken early one morning in Beijing as I wandered the streets in the reportage style, looking for images. I used a tilt-shift lens to give me the selective focus look. I could have done this afterwards in Photoshop, but I really like to make my final images in the camera using what Ansel Adams called ‘previsualization‘. Adams came up with this concept when he was developing the Zone System. Stated simply it means that you envision the final print before you even take the picture. When you are working with black and white film and print materials this is a very important thing because how you want the final print to look, previsualization, will effect how you make your exposure, develop your film, and print the final image. Even now in the digital age this concept can be applied. I like being locked into a particular look. I like the risk that you have to take to commit to an image in the camera, not after. You might also notice that a few of these images are for my amusement park series, which I spoke about yesterday in my post ‘Amusement Park – Ocean City, NJ‘. Practicing previsualization will make you a better photographer, so go ahead and take some risks.
